The Contraception Pill

Getting the Contraception Pill at Hoban Health

Please read the information below to learn more about how the contraception pill works, who it’s suitable for, and how to book your appointment.
Once you’re ready, phone Hoban Health on 01 485 3258 to book a consultation with our doctor or nurse.

If you do not qualify for free contraception under the national scheme, you can still book in as a private patient — simply call us for more details on costs and options.

What is the Contraception Pill?

The contraception pill is a daily tablet that contains hormones to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types:

  • Combined oral contraceptive pill – contains oestrogen and progestogen

  • Progestogen-only pill (mini-pill) – contains only progestogen

Both work mainly by stopping ovulation and making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.

Who is Eligible for Free Contraception?

According to gov.ie, women and people with a uterus aged 17 to 31 (inclusive) can access free contraception through participating GPs, family planning clinics, and primary care centres.

To qualify you must:

  • Be ordinarily resident in Ireland

  • Be aged between 17 and 31 years

  • Have a Personal Public Service (PPS) number

The free contraception scheme covers:

  • Initial consultation and prescription

  • Follow-up consultations

  • The cost of the pill itself (dispensed by a pharmacy)

If you are outside this age range or not eligible for the free scheme, Hoban Health offers private consultations and prescriptions.

How the Appointment Works

  1. Consultation – Our doctor or nurse will review your medical history, discuss your needs, and help choose the right pill for you.

  2. Prescription – You’ll receive a prescription for your chosen pill, which can be filled at your local pharmacy.

  3. Follow-Up – We’ll arrange a follow-up to check how you’re getting on and adjust your prescription if needed.

Why Choose the Contraception Pill?

  • Highly effective when taken correctly

  • Easy to use and does not interrupt intimacy

  • Can help regulate periods and reduce menstrual cramps

  • May improve acne for some people

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, the pill can have side effects. These may include nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, or mood changes. Serious side effects are rare but will be discussed during your consultation.
