What is Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera is a contraceptive injection containing the hormone progestogen. It works by preventing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus to stop sperm from reaching an egg. Each injection provides protection against pregnancy for approximately 12 weeks (3 months).

Who is Eligible for Free Depo-Provera?

Under the HSE Free Contraception Scheme, women and people with a uterus aged 17 to 31 can access free contraception, including Depo-Provera injections, via participating healthcare providers.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be ordinarily resident in Ireland

  • Be aged between 17 and 31 years inclusive

  • Have a Personal Public Service (PPS) number

The scheme covers consultation, injection administration, and follow-up care.

If you do not meet these criteria, Hoban Health provides private consultations and Depo-Provera injections.
