What is Implanon?

Implanon is a small, flexible plastic rod about the size of a matchstick that is inserted under the skin of your upper arm. It releases a steady low dose of the hormone progestogen to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years.

Who is Eligible for Free Implanon Insertion?

Under the HSE Free Contraception Scheme, women and people with a uterus aged 17 to 31 can access free contraception, including the Implanon implant, through participating healthcare providers.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be ordinarily resident in Ireland

  • Be aged between 17 and 31 years inclusive

  • Have a Personal Public Service (PPS) number

The scheme covers the consultation, insertion procedure, and follow-up care.

If you do not meet these criteria, Hoban Health offers private consultations and Implanon insertion.

How the Procedure Works

  1. Consultation – Our clinician will assess your medical history, discuss your contraception needs, and determine if Implanon is suitable for you.

  2. Insertion Appointment – Implanon is inserted under the skin of your upper arm during a quick, in-clinic procedure using local anaesthetic.

  3. Follow-Up – A check-up appointment ensures the implant is correctly placed and answers any questions you may have.
