If you do not qualify for free coil insertion under the national scheme, you can still book privately — call us for details on pricing and options.
What are IUD and IUS Coils?
-
IUD (Intrauterine Device): A small, T-shaped device made of plastic and copper, inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It works primarily by preventing sperm from fertilising an egg.
-
IUS (Intrauterine System): Similar in shape to an IUD but releases a small amount of hormone (progestogen) to thicken cervical mucus and thin the uterine lining, providing effective contraception and often reducing menstrual bleeding.
Who is Eligible for Free Coil Insertion?
Under the HSE Free Contraception Scheme, women and people with a uterus aged 17 to 31 can access free contraception, including IUD and IUS coils, via participating healthcare providers.
To qualify, you must:
-
Be ordinarily resident in Ireland
-
Be aged between 17 and 31 years inclusive
-
Have a Personal Public Service (PPS) number

The scheme covers the consultation, coil insertion procedure, and follow-up care.
If you do not meet these criteria, Hoban Health provides private consultations and coil insertion services.
How the Procedure Works
-
Consultation – Our clinician will assess your medical history, discuss your contraception options, and determine if an IUD or IUS is suitable for you.
-
Insertion Appointment – The coil is inserted during a brief in-clinic procedure. It can cause mild discomfort but is usually well tolerated.
-
Follow-Up – A check-up appointment ensures the coil is correctly positioned and you are comfortable.
